Shopping
Recommendations
Destination Kenya recognises that
shopping is an important part of any traveller’s enjoyment.
With this in mind, we have pleasure in presenting a portfolio of what we feel
are good shopping opportunities in Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar.
In presenting this portfolio, Destination Kenya is proud to make the public
statement that we do not ask for nor do we accept any sales commission on
any purchases you may make in East Africa as a result of any shopping recommendations
we may have made.
Over
time, many driver guides have become accustomed to being offered, and accepting,
commissions on tourist souvenir purchases
We are making a break with this practice and can only ask that if your driver
guides or Travel Directors prove their worth in recommending good shops where
you are happy with your purchases, that you may consider reflecting your appreciation
in your gratuities that you may pay during your safari.
Any discounts that the vendors offer are to go directly to you...the purchaser.
And, on discounts, some vendors have fixed / published prices and in other
places, negotiating on price is the order of the day.
Please remember that cash purchases often attract a bigger discount than purchases
made on credit cards, which are widely accepted in Nairobi, Mombasa, Arusha
and Zanzibar. Credit cards are generally accepted in all shops at hotels,
camps and lodges.
Visa and MasterCard are generally preferred over and above American Express
and Diners cards are not widely accepted.
The shops and shopping opportunities that we recommend are based on our own
local knowledge and also from feed back from our safari clients
For those safari clients who find themselves in Nairobi on a Friday we do
strongly recommend a visit to the Masai Market within the safe grounds of
the Village Market Sopping Mall, Limuru road.
For serious shopaholics, we can arrange (at a cost) to provide visitors with a personal local shopping guide in Nairobi to get you around the various shopping stops in a time efficient way.

Born
and educated in Berlin, painting was initially a hobby for Bettina. She
has since exhibited in Berlin, Hamburg, Paris and Perth, Australia. Her
early work was influenced by surrealism, and her focus begun with painting
horses. In 1980 Bettina spent time in Seychelles, and then came to Kenya.
The epic landscape had a profound effect on her painting, and went on to
capture Kenya’s
breathtaking scenery and spectacular wildlife on canvas.
Since making Kenya her home, she has had many successful exhibitions in Nairobi.
Bettina find renewed inspiration for her painting from the many safaris she
takes, often in the company of her husband, John Glen, a well known figure
in Kenya tourism. The grandeur and the light of the East African landscape
is captured with sensitivity and detail in the muted earth colours so characteristics
of the sub-Saharan region. The typical African thorn tree is also a recurring
theme in her work. Bettina will paint on commission safari photos of visitor’s
favourite scenes (landscapes) taken in East Africa.
